The Kapsel Solar Crank Radio is an emergency radio with a 5000 mAh power bank, LED flashlight, reading lamp, solar panel and a dedicated SOS button. The internal lithium-ion battery charges three ways: over USB-C, with the hand crank, or from the solar panel on the top. A disruption takes three things from a household at the same time: information, light and power. This one unit covers all three. Public service radio carries news and official emergency messages on FM when the internet and the mobile network are down. The LED light does not depend on loose batteries. And the 5000 mAh battery gives an ordinary phone roughly one full charge, which is often the difference between reaching someone and not.

How to use it

Use the radio once in calm conditions so the steps sit in your hands before you need them.

Charge it before you store it. Fill the battery over USB-C with the included cable before you pack your Kapsel. That activates the battery and gives you a full baseline, so the crank stays a reserve rather than your starting point.
In a blackout, start with light and radio. Take the radio from your Energy & Light capsule, switch on the flashlight or the reading lamp, then set the band selector to FM, extend the antenna and find public service or a local station.
Crank when there is no power left. Unfold the handle and turn it at an even speed. About a minute of cranking typically gives a few minutes of radio, or considerably longer on light alone. A longer continuous crank gives more runtime.
Top up with solar during the day. Angle the panel towards direct daylight. Solar is a slow trickle that helps hold the charge. Treat it as support, not as your only way to charge.
Save the USB output for critical devices. Connect a phone or a headlamp when you need to make a call, check information or get a light working again. Disconnect as soon as you have what you needed.
Use the SOS button only to be found. It sounds the alarm and flashes the light. Switch it off again once you have been noticed, so the battery goes back to light and radio.
After the outage. Switch off radio and lights, wipe the unit dry if it has been exposed to moisture, charge it fully over USB-C and put it back in your Energy & Light capsule.
