The Kapsel Solar Crank Radio is an emergency FM radio with integrated LED flashlight, reading lamp, solar panel and USB power bank function. An internal rechargeable lithium-ion battery can be charged by USB, by the hand crank or by the solar panel.

It is included in the Kapsel System because it gives you three things during a disruption: a reliable way to receive news and emergency alerts when internet and TV are down, light that does not rely on loose batteries, and a limited but important ability to charge small USB devices so that at least one phone can stay alive. How do you use the Kapsel Emergency Solar Crank Radio in an outage or emergency?

Use the radio once in normal conditions so the steps sit in your hands before you need them.

  1. Charge before storage. Fully charge the radio with a 5 V USB charger before you pack your Kapsel. This activates the internal battery and gives you a full baseline charge.
  2. In a blackout, start with light and radio. Take the radio from your Energy & Light capsule. Switch on the flashlight or reading lamp so you can see what you are doing. Then select FM mode, extend the antenna and tune to a public service or local emergency station.
  3. Use the hand crank when there is no power. If the battery runs low and you have no USB power, unfold the handle and crank at an even speed. Around one minute of cranking typically gives a few minutes of radio or dozens of minutes of light. A longer continuous crank gives more runtime.
  4. Top up with solar when possible. During the day, place the radio so the solar panel faces direct daylight. This gives a slow trickle charge that helps maintain the battery. Use it as support, not as your only charging method.
  5. Use USB power out only for critical devices. Connect a phone or other small 5 V device to the USB output when you need to make a call, check information or charge a headlamp. Treat this as emergency power and disconnect as soon as you reach your goal.
  6. After the outage. Switch off radio and lights. Wipe the unit dry if it has been exposed to moisture. Recharge it fully by USB and return it to your Energy & Light capsule so it is ready for the next event.
