Kapsel Water Filter Straw is a portable water filter with a hollow-fibre membrane. You drink straight through the straw from a bottle, a mug or a water source. The membrane mechanically filters clear fresh water from a tap, lake, river or spring. The straw is included to make clear surface water safer to drink when the usual drinking water isn't working. It's a simple backup. You drink from a natural source with no pump, power or complicated equipment.

When you will need it

Use the straw when you need drinking water from a clear source or a container, and as a simple backup when the tap water isn't working or you're unsure about it.

On trips and travel: Drink clear surface water or tap water on a hike, a trip or at the cabin when you don't know how good the water is, as long as it doesn't smell strongly or look odd.
Shorter outages at home: Keep the straw in your Kapsel and use it with stored water or clear water you've collected in clean containers, if the drinking water temporarily isn't working. Boil the water as well when the risk is higher.
Backup to the filtered water bottle: The straw and the filtered water bottle give you two ways to treat clear fresh water, depending on where you are and how much water you need.
Car and cabin: If you keep a Kapsel system in the car, at work or at the cabin, put a water filter straw in each one. Then there's a way to treat water in every place.

How to use it

Try the straw once when things are calm. Then you know how the water tastes, how easy it is to drink through and how to hold it, before you need it outdoors or when the water stops working.

Flush the filter before first use. Draw at least 0.5 to 1 litre of clean water through the straw. Suck slowly and spit out the first mouthful, so loose particles are rinsed away.
Choose clear fresh water from a tap, lake, river or spring. Never use seawater, chemically contaminated water, industrial waste or water that smells strongly or looks odd.
Put the straw straight into the bottle, mug or water source. If you want to connect it to a water bag or tube, follow the Instructions & Plans handbook.
Drink by sucking slowly through the mouthpiece. Take steady draws rather than quick, hard ones, so the filter works better and you don't get unfiltered water from the mouthpiece.
Blow out the remaining water after use. Shake out the last drops and let the straw air dry with both ends open.
Replace the filter if it has been wet and frozen. A wet filter that freezes can be damaged inside and must not be used again.
