Frequently asked questions

Why is an emergency sleeping bag in the kit?
People most often get cold in stairwells, cars, shelters or on the way to a meeting point, not deep in the forest. When someone is wet, tired or injured the body loses heat faster, and this thin reflective layer keeps warmth close to the body until you reach a better place or professional help.
How do you use it?
Open the pouch carefully, unfold the bag fully and turn the reflective side towards the body. Cover the person from the shoulders down, tuck the edges under them if you can, and cover the head and neck too. Keep watching the person and add clothes or a blanket on top if needed.
How does it keep you warm?
It is made from aluminium coated PET foil that reflects a large part of your body heat back towards you, while the outside works as a wind and splash barrier. It does not create heat itself, so it works best over dry clothing and together with shelter from wind and rain.
Which capsule does it belong to and how do I keep it ready?
It lives in the Personal & Shelter capsule. Keep it flat packed in its original pouch, stored dry, cool and out of direct sunlight, and always in the same spot. It is a single use item, so do not open it for practice. Keep one per person plus one spare in the household.

Key features

  • Power cut in winter: The heating is off and the apartment is cooling down. You lie the most sensitive person in the emergency sleeping bag on the sofa under a normal blanket and give them a warm drink.
  • Car breakdown on a dark road: The car will not start and you wait for help. You move everyone to the passenger side away from traffic, wrap each person in an emergency sleeping bag and use coats on top.
  • Evacuation to a meeting point: You have to leave home in bad weather. At the meeting point or shelter one person is very cold after the walk. You lie them in the sleeping bag while they sit on their backpack to avoid ground cold.
  • First aid situation: Someone is injured and waiting for ambulance. You have already called 112. You lay them in the sleeping bag to reduce heat loss while you keep talking and monitoring their breathing and awareness.
  • Camping or cabin fallback: You need an extra layer inside a sleeping bag or as a ground barrier under a thin mattress. You use the sleeping bag as a reflective layer to keep more warmth in close to the body.
